A safe educational environment for over 300 children
In the city of Romny, the safety of children during school hours is a critical priority. Since School No. 10 and Kindergarten No. 2 are located next to each other, the joint use and arrangement of a shelter in the kindergarten premises is a strategic decision to restore full-fledged offline education for primary and secondary school students, as well as preschoolers.
Due to regular threats and prolonged alarms, the shelter has effectively become the main place where children spend their days.
However, the kindergarten’s basement, designed for temporary use, does not meet the requirements for a full educational process. This creates significant inconveniences: the lack of zoning prevents different classes from learning and children from playing at the same time.
As of 2025, the condition of the premises requires a comprehensive approach to refurbishment:
- Engineering infrastructure: The ventilation system is either absent or outdated, leading to a lack of fresh air when large numbers of children are present.
- Sanitary conditions: Complete refurbishment of toilets adapted for children of different ages is required.
- Finishing: Concrete floors and unprotected walls do not allow children to stay indoors for long periods of time, especially during the cold season.
- Functionality: Lack of adequate lighting and sound insulation between the school and kindergarten areas.
The project involves a large-scale renovation of the basement (budget over 14.8 million UAH):
- Major repairs: Waterproofing, antiseptic treatment and finishing of walls and ceilings.
- Flooring and utilities: Installation of soft flooring, new electrical wiring and inclusive water supply systems.
- Climate solutions: Installation of modern supply and exhaust ventilation with air recovery.
- Zoning: Creation of separate classrooms for Secondary School No. 10 and play/sleeping areas for Preschool No. 2.
- Furnishing: Complete furnishing with ergonomic furniture for study and recreation.
Thanks to the renovation, the shelter in Romny will be transformed into an underground educational hub:
- Fully equipped classrooms: The ability to conduct lessons even during alerts without compromising the quality of education.
- A cosy environment for children: Special areas for preschoolers where they can sleep and play in safety.
- Digital accessibility: Stable internet connection for using gadgets in learning.
- Psychological comfort: Modern design that minimises the feeling of being in a basement and reduces stress in children.
Why it matters
Creating this space will allow children in the Romny community to choose between safety and education. Our work aims to create conditions in which children can stay in the city, socialise with their peers and gain knowledge in a professionally equipped environment, regardless of the duration of air raid alerts.
