A safe space for 296 children
The shelter serves as a safe space for:
- 61 preschoolers
- 235 schoolchildren
In total, 296 children need a safe and stable educational space every day.
Due to prolonged and frequent air raid alerts in the Sumy region, the educational process almost constantly takes place in shelters.
The basement is officially accepted as the simplest shelter, but it is not suitable for children to stay in for long periods of time.
In fact, this temporary solution has become the main place of learning for both schoolchildren and preschoolers.
Current state of the shelter
Total area of the shelter – 354 m²
(177 m² – school section, 177 m² – preschool section)
Main problems:
- no ventilation;
- no sanitary facilities;
- no heating system;
- insufficient lighting for learning;leaking sewage pipes, damaging the floor;
- concrete floor has cracks, unevenness and potholes;
- traces of leaks and mould on the walls;
- ceilings installed with height differences.
In such conditions, it is difficult to organise:proper classrooms:
- recreation areas;
- space for preschoolers to stay;
- safe sanitary conditions.
The project involves comprehensive renovation and refurbishment of the entire shelter, covering an area of 354 m².
The planned works include:
- levelling and finishing walls and ceilings;
- replacing damaged drainage systems;
- installing sanitary facilities;
- dismantling and upgrading electrical networks;
- installation of a ventilation system;
- provision of electric heating;
- dismantling of existing concrete floors;
- waterproofing and installation of new floors.
The renovated shelter will feature:
- safe classrooms with high-quality lighting;
- functional sanitary facilities;
- adequate ventilation;
- a warm and dry space for daily use;
- the possibility of continuous learning during prolonged emergencies.
This means that 296 children in the Sumy region will be able to:
- study without interruption to the academic process;
- stay in a safe and dignified environment;
- maintain a stable educational rhythm even in wartime conditions.
Why is this important
When a shelter becomes the main place of learning, it must meet the standards of a full-fledged educational space. For the children of Korovintsy, this is not a temporary solution — it is their daily reality. Equipping the shelter is an investment in safety, continuity of education, and stability in the border region.
