Schools across Chernihiv Oblast have been operating under the conditions of a full-scale war for several years, and access to quality in-person education remains limited for many children. Frequent air raid alerts, the threat of shelling, distance learning, power outages, and unstable internet connections continue to widen learning gaps.<\/p>\n
With the support of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the savED team has launched a learning recovery programme in Chernihiv Oblast, covering 12 educational centres<\/strong> across eight communities. Throughout the spring, more than 1,400 children<\/strong> have already had the opportunity to systematically strengthen their knowledge of the Ukrainian language, mathematics, English, and primary school subjects.<\/p>\n The programme is being implemented in schools in the Tupychiv, Horodnia, Desna, Mena, Mykhailo-Kotsiubynske, Ripky, Chernihiv, and Novyi Bilous communities. Classes are held in person in safe school facilities. However, due to the challenging security situation, certain modules may be delivered online to ensure that children can continue learning without interruption.<\/p>\n The programme is based on a structured methodology for addressing learning loss that has already proven effective in war-affected communities. Before the classes began, students completed a baseline assessment to determine their current knowledge levels and to form learning groups tailored to their individual needs. Upon completion of the course, they will undergo a final assessment to measure each child’s learning progress.<\/p>\n At the same time, the programme is designed to achieve more than academic improvement. Every lesson incorporates elements of social and emotional learning (SEL)<\/strong> to help children rebuild social skills, strengthen their sense of safety, and develop emotional resilience and motivation to learn.<\/p>\n Supporting teachers is another key component of the project. So far, 83 educators<\/strong> have completed training on learning recovery methodologies, social and emotional learning, gender-responsive teaching approaches, and creating safe learning environments.<\/p>\n For the savED team, this programme is a continuation of its long-term work to address learning loss in communities most affected by the war.
